What can you expect from a Lactation Consult

The first home visit involves a thorough assessment and
individualised management plan, and follow-up phone calls/email.

What can you expect during a Consultation:
Your baby's date of birth
Your baby's birth weight and any other weights (having your blue book handy is helpful)
Ascertaining how many wet and dirty nappy's your baby is having
Any pain or discomfort you are experiencing
Any concerns you have about your baby
Each mother and baby dyad is different, and I will try my best to accommodate you and your family and see you as soon as possible following our initial telephone call with you.
Payment Terms: Full payment is due on completion of the consult.
Payment may be made by cash, EFT or credit card
** Some private health funds may offer you a rebate on Lactation Services, you will need to ask them, as it can depend on your fund and level of cover.

What can you expect during a Consultation:
- Check on your baby's appearance and behaviour
- Check your breasts and nipples.
- Watch your baby breastfeed and offer help with positioning if you need it.
- Show you how to tell when your baby is latched and feeding well.
- Show you how to rectify any breastfeeding problems you are having.
- Give you written handouts to help you at home.
- Guidance on who and how to call for more help or questions
- Show you how to settle your baby, and learn how to recognise your baby's cues
- Put a gloved finger into your baby’s mouth to check your baby’s suck, swallow co-ordination and oral structures (also called an oral function assessment, to check for any suspected restricted oral tissues)
- Check your baby's weight using a digital scale
- Show you how to correctly use a breastpump, if required.
- Check the size of your breastpump flanges to ensure that you have the right size
- Refer you to other members of a health care team who may be able to assist you with concerns or questions, you may have that are not within my scope
- As we are Allied Heath care practitioners, assessment of a concern is within our scope. Only a medical doctor has the ability to diagnose, so therefore please note this is outside of our scope of practice.

How can I assist a new mother?
I can assist with a variety of breastfeeding challenges, to ensure a successful breastfeeding relationship with your baby is a pleasurable one. Having also had my own multiple birth babies, I also have both personal experience in this area, as well as helping many other multiple birth mothers.
