All babies really like to suck as this is a natural instinct and dummies are commonly offered as parents may find them useful to calm an unhappy baby or help a baby fall off to sleep.
However, if a dummy is offered to a very young baby before breastfeeding really gets going well, the baby may become confused as a different kind of sucking required.
Dummies are not usually recommended for breastfed babies for the first few weeks, so there is no confusion between them and the breast. So, wait a few weeks if you can.
